Level Contributor 15 posts 1 review Restaurants and english menus 9 years ago We are looking for nice dinner out with good atmosphere and good food. These 4 were recommended, but I was wondering if anybody knows if they have menus in English? Just a little nervous that if we get off the beaten path we will have trouble communicating. While I understand many people speak English, I don't want to assume everybody does. This forum was a great help last time so I thought I'd try again. Re Restaurants and english menus 9 years ago I can't answer your question specifically, but I might suggest you bring a menu translator with you. They come in small booklets you can carry with you or online, if you're a lot more technologically advanced than I am. Edit Generally, I've found that restaurants in the single digit arrondissements will have English menus, simply because they're frequented by so many tourists. Re Restaurants and english menus 9 years ago Having a menu in English doesn't necessarily make it easier to communicate. Yes, it may be easier for you to read the menu, but there's no guarantee that your waiter will speak English, or that the translation will be accurate. Sometimes I do not understand the translation, but am familiar with the dish as it's written in French. I agree with HappyGoin about being prepared with a menu translator. There's a good one on Patricia Wells' website, or her app The Food Lover's Guide to Paris. Edited 9 years ago Level Contributor 69 posts 124 reviews 62 helpful votes 3. Re Restaurants and english menus 9 years ago Maybe you should take some time to learn basic French since you will be in France, many people don't speak English. It will also make your trip more enjoyable. Level Contributor 14,097 posts 2 reviews 6 helpful votes 4. Re Restaurants and english menus 9 years ago If a place has menus in English, you probably don't want to eat there. Same if it has pictures of the food. Re Restaurants and english menus 9 years ago hi There are a lot of place with english menus there are a lot of waiters speaking english well enough Some basic preparation is indeed helpful boeuf = beef, poulet = chicken etc can help, fish is more comlicated we use 365 different names for fishes, I don't understand half of them myself. if in doubt, check on your smartphone with google translator. Works fine. If not just pick your choice and discover - Level Contributor 7,093 posts 160 reviews 144 helpful votes 7. Re Restaurants and english menus 9 years ago As everyone said - having a menu in English is not necessarily a good thing as it means the place caters to tourists, not locals. Also the translations may be wrong. I have seen a fish dish on a menu where the English translation mentioned a poached roofing tile. Get a small booklet Level Contributor 16,505 posts 113 reviews 54 helpful votes 8. Re Restaurants and english menus 9 years ago Le Chardenoux is probably our favourite restaurant. Good choice! If you look at restaurants' websites, they will often have a translation of their menus. Le Chardenoux has an English language option at the bottom of their home page, on the left. Re Restaurants and english menus 9 years ago That's true, Peri, but the OP should bear in mind that the actual menu may be changed from what's posted on line. It's sometimes only a suggestion of the kind of dishes a restaurant serves. Level Contributor 16,047 posts 19 reviews 47 helpful votes 10. Re Restaurants and english menus 9 years ago I'm intrigued as to how many of the locals go along with the 'never choose from a translated menu ' theory. It feels both outdated and snobbish to me. I have had excellent meals in France in places where the menu was translated and poor ones where it wasn't. Of course there are some horrid tourist restaurants but I'm not sure that the language is a reliable indicator. Outside Paris I have been to charming family run restaurants where the owners have proudly told me that their son/ daughter is learning English at school and had translated the menu. I'd have missed out on several excellent meals if I had taken the advice here.
